Featuring narrative figure paintings by San Francisco artist Dana DeKalb. Fascinated by visual storytelling, DeKalb’s paintings are told from an outsider’s perspective, the result of a childhood spent as an ex-patriate American living in Indonesia, Pakistan and Australia.

Whittier Art Gallery, Jan 30 - Mar 2, 2008 MADI COMFORT RETROSPECTIVE
January 30 - March 2, 2008 OPENING RECEPTION: FEBRUARY 3RD 2-6 pm MADI COMFORT DAY On the 3rd day of February, 2002, a PROCLAMATION was issued by the Mayor of Whittier, Allan Zolnekoff, honoring Ms. Comfort for the historical precedent set by her family of pioneering African-Americans to settle in Whittier and overcoming racial unwelcome, her achievements as an artist, her contributions to the Whittier Community, and her dedication to the arts and music in Whittier. The Gallery proudly hosts the month long exhibit. Madi Comfort led a remarkable life. She was the stuff of movies, music, and gardens. She played the jazz singer in the cult classic “Kiss Me Deadly”. Her last name is from her marriage to Joe Comfort, bassist of the Nat King Cole Trio and most Nelson Riddle/Frank Sinatra recordings. Her life long friend Duke Ellington wrote the popular "Satin Doll" after her, thus giving her claim to be "the original Satin Doll". In 1970 she settled in Whittier where her love of gardening was showcased as part of the Rio Hondo Symphony Guild Garden Tour. At age 59, she enrolled in Jerry Romotsky’s Art and Design class at Rio Hondo College. For the month of February, we will be able to view the bold, evocative, intensely vibrant , and prolific output that emerged from those beginnings. To add to the celebration, A piano will take up residence in the Gallery to provide music and accompaniment to actress/singer Paula Kelly offering songs like "Satin Doll" and other Duke Ellington favorites for the opening reception , Valentines Day, and the closing reception on February, 29th. Each Sunday afternoon music will be performed by other surprise guests. You are invited to join us often throughout the month of February to celebrate the life and work of Madi Comfort. ARA Project's Charity Art Show November 29, 2008
Dozens of local artists will display their work for sale in a beautiful Italian Villa Estate.
