Wonderful new watercolor pieces by Marty Wilson!

'The Joshua Tree National Park has become a favorite place to visit. The Joshua trees are rather bizarre and each one tells a different story, sometimes having multiple branches and sometimes only one. '

2012 Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts

by Robin Schroeder 8. February 2012 19:09

Join us for the 52nd Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts
February 24-26, 2012
Hillcrest Congregational Church in La Habra Heights, California

Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts

The Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts, one of the premier juried art shows in the West, is excited to announce The Pop Folk Art Quartet as the Featured Artists for the 52nd Annual Festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, February 24, 25 & 26, 2012. As always, it is free admission and free parking for all attendees. The festival has an extensive variety of art available for purchase at a wide range of prices: watercolor and oil paintings, unique jewelry, ceramics, acrylics, pottery, hand-woven clothing, photography, stained and fused glass, metal and wire sculpture, woodworking, and a great selection of handcrafted gifts in the Arts & Crafts Boutique. There will be many artists demonstrating their skills throughout the weekend. Children can participate in the free art workshops on Saturday and Sunday, where they can make their own creations. Festival attendees can browse, shop, enjoy musical entertainment, and eat at the Starving Artist Café, catered by Laura’s Café & Bakery. The Pop Folk Art Quartet, consisting of Annette Atwood, Joel Nakamura and Artist Sisters CJ and Miss Mindy, will be the Featured Artists for the 2012 Festival.

ANNETTE ATWOOD, a resident of Whittier, is a renowned ceramic artist whose work has been called whimsical and joyous. Her ceramics are brightly glazed and often center around family, life and her faith. She enjoys working in the community using art as a vehicle for healing or celebration; she was involved in several community art projects including the Patricia L. Schiefly Breast Cancer Support Group’s Words of Hope and Whittier Christian High School’s 50-Year Commemorative Tile Panels. She has also created popular hand-carved garden folk art that is featured in many unique shops and was the head designer of a hand-painted children’s clothing manufacturer.

JOEL NAKAMURA is known for his truly unique style: a blend of folk art and sophisticated iconography rendered in a neo-primitive technique. His art portrays humanity in primal, edgy hues which has captured the attention of many private and corporate collections. Splitting his time between commercial and fine art projects, he has created many commissions that reflect his knowledge of tribal art and mythology. His paintings have enlivened the pages of many books and publications, including the opening and closing ceremonies’ programs for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Proud recipient of over 200 awards of excellence, he resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

ARTIST SISTERS CJ & MISS MINDY were born into a family of artists and designers, and they often work collaboratively on projects and art shows. Most recently the two sisters released a children’s book set with Baby Tattoo Books Publishing. CJ (Candace Metzger) is a painter, illustrator, graphic designer and writer working in Los Angeles. Blending surreal and whimsical imagery, and using acrylics, collage, mixed media and digital methods, her narrative work reveals sweet, wondrous and sometimes somber stories of humans and their relationships with animals and the natural environment. Combining forces with her sister, she has enjoys bringing their often described pop- surrealism or urban folk art to the public eye. Miss Mindy (Melinda Allen) lives and works out of her home studio in Eagle Rock. Her works consist mainly of woodcut paintings, mixed media shadow boxes, and fluid ink drawings and sketches. She loves to explore mood, expressions and bizarre humor. Describing her work as “cartoon folk art”, she blends her animation background with an original style to tell stories of girls and imps, fairies and troublemakers in precarious and humorous circumstances, mishaps and shenanigans.

The festival attracts art aficionados young and old from all over California. Each year many new artists, as well as long-time favorites, are chosen to participate.

Hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Friday and Saturday, 11:30 am to 5:00 pm Sunday.
And remember - admission and parking are free!
The festival is hosted by Hillcrest Congregational Church, and is located near the border of Whittier and La Habra Heights at 2000 West Road in La Habra Heights.
